Melania Trump Announces $5M Foster Care Scholarship Fund at LSU
Melania Trump partners with LSU to launch a $5 million endowment providing scholarships for foster youth through the Fostering the Future program.
POLICY WIRE — Baton Rouge, USA — Melania Trump arrived in Louisiana on Saturday to unveil a new collaboration between Louisiana State University and her ‘Fostering the Future’ initiative. The partnership aims to provide financial aid to LSU students who were previously part of the foster care system.
The White House confirmed that Trump and LSU secured $5 million to establish an endowment fund for these scholarships. While the total amount was disclosed, specific details regarding the origins of the funding were not made public.
The program will receive significant visibility throughout the Baton Rouge campus. Additionally, the initiative will be highlighted at Tiger Stadium immediately before the kickoff of the LSU-Alabama game.
Trump began her focus on foster care following the conclusion of President Donald Trump’s first term in 2021. She established ‘Fostering the Future’ to offer essential resources and educational support. LSU is currently one of more than 20 higher education institutions nationwide enrolled in the program.
Earlier this year, the first lady visited the Capitol to advocate for a federal legislative package. The proposal seeks to modernize an aging federal program to expand services for youth in foster care. The bill has passed the House and is currently under consideration by the Senate.
During her testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee, Trump noted that students in foster care face significant hurdles regarding transportation and housing. She emphasized that these external pressures can hinder academic performance and long-term financial stability.
Speaking in April, she stated that closing the opportunity gap is a necessity and remarked that new legislation for the foster care community represents a moral imperative.
In November, the first lady led an executive order signed by the president. That order aims to connect federal agencies, academic institutions, the private sector, and charities to build career and education paths for foster youth.
She has also launched ‘Fostering the Future Together,’ an international expansion of the program that now spans over 45 countries.
The announcement coincided with a major rivalry game between LSU and Alabama. Both programs entered the matchup vying for spots in the College Football Playoff.
President Trump has previously attended LSU games twice: once in Alabama in 2019 and again in New Orleans in January 2020 for the national championship. While Melania Trump was present for the latter event, the president was not expected to attend Saturday’s contest.
