POLICY WIRE — Manchester, UK — Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has announced a comprehensive plan to offer housing to rough sleepers across England. The initiative, which draws inspiration from the ‘Everyone In’ strategy employed during the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to provide immediate and sustained support to those experiencing homelessness.
The ‘Everyone In’ initiative, implemented during the pandemic, successfully provided temporary accommodation to rough sleepers to protect them from the virus. Burnham’s new plan seeks to replicate this model by offering permanent housing solutions and support services to help individuals transition out of homelessness.
“This Christmas, we want to ensure that no one has to spend the festive season on the streets,” Burnham stated. “Our aim is to provide not just a roof over their heads, but also the support needed to rebuild their lives.”
The plan includes collaboration with local authorities, housing providers, and charities to identify available properties and create a support network for those moving into new accommodations. Additionally, the initiative will focus on addressing the root causes of homelessness, such as mental health issues, substance abuse, and lack of employment opportunities.
Details of the funding and timeline for the implementation of the plan are yet to be announced. However, Burnham has assured that the initiative will be rolled out in phases, starting with the most vulnerable individuals.
