Marcos Promises Relief in Philippines’ 2026 State of the Nation Address
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pledges tax, electricity, and rice price relief in his 2026 State of the Nation Address, amid funding questions and corruption promises.
POLICY WIRE — Manila, Philippines — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. utilized his 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday to announce relief measures for taxes, electricity charges, and high rice prices. He also vowed to pursue corruption cases related to a flood-control scandal that has plagued his administration.
During the one-and-a-half-hour speech, Marcos outlined several initiatives aimed at alleviating the financial burdens on Filipino citizens. “We will provide relief from taxes, reduce electricity charges, and stabilize rice prices to ensure our people can afford their basic needs,” Marcos stated.
He further pledged to address the corruption scandal that has tarnished his administration’s reputation. “We won’t rest until those responsible for the flood-control scandal are brought to justice. Corruption won’t be tolerated,” he asserted.
Analysts noted that the speech touched on issues many Filipinos expected Marcos to address. However, they raised concerns about the feasibility of the proposed relief measures. “While the promises are welcome, there are significant questions about how the government will fund these initiatives,” said political analyst Maria Santos.
Santos — and other observers questioned the absence of austerity measures or detailed funding plans in the address. “The President announced ambitious relief plans, but there was no mention of how these will be financed or what cuts might be necessary to balance the budget,” she added.
The flood-control scandal, which involved alleged misuse of funds intended for flood mitigation projects, has been a major point of contention. Marcos’ commitment to pursue those involved is seen as an attempt to restore public trust.
