Manchester City’s Record-Breaking Summer Spending Surpasses $600 Million with Fernandez and Ndiaye Signings

POLICY WIRE — Manchester, England — Manchester City has finalized its midfield overhaul, securing Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a staggering 125 million pounds ($169 million), matching the British transfer record.

Fernandez, who received a red card in the World Cup final against Spain, is the third central midfielder acquired by City for over $100 million this summer. The other two are Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for $117 million and Elliot Anderson from England for $155 million.

The midfield revamp was necessitated by the exits of key players Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders. Fernandez, a 2022 World Cup winner, previously held the British soccer’s most expensive player title when he joined Chelsea from Benfica for 106.7 million pounds ($131.4 million) in early 2023.

Fernandez will reunite with Enzo Maresca, who managed Chelsea before joining City and appointed Fernandez as his vice captain. Maresca has emphasized the need for additional leadership within the squad.

City’s pursuit of Fernandez seemed uncertain when they missed a reported deadline set by Chelsea in early August. However, negotiations resumed late in the window, culminating in a deal on the final day.

Fernandez had expressed a desire to live in Madrid, leading to his temporary exclusion from Chelsea’s lineup by then-manager Liam Rosenior. Fernandez addressed Chelsea fans on Instagram, acknowledging the challenging period he endured.

Ndiaye’s departure is a significant loss for Everton, yet it marks a major career advancement for the player, who was in England’s second tier with Sheffield United just three years ago.
