POLICY WIRE — Savannah, United States — A man allegedly tricked valet workers at a Georgia hotel into handing over a $90,000 BMW SUV by claiming to be a professional basketball player.
Surveillance footage showed the suspect entering the hotel lobby, taking items from a white Audi, and presenting a valet with a ticket for a gray 2026 BMW X5 parked at the Hyatt Regency Savannah. The vehicle was reportedly taken around 12:30 a.m. on August 14, according to a police report obtained by WSB-TV.
The suspect told the valet that he was a pro athlete with multiple cars at the hotel. He then drove off in the BMW, which had been loaned to a guest. Police have not disclosed which NBA player the suspect was impersonating, and it remains unclear how he obtained the valet ticket. The dealership later tracked the stolen car to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and alerted local authorities.
Investigations revealed that the Audi left at the hotel had also been reported missing the day before the BMW theft. The same individual was connected to another valet-related theft at a Savannah hotel two weeks earlier. A woman’s 2019 Toyota C-HR was stolen after her retrieval code was used by someone else, leaving her car missing the night before she requested its return.

Police released surveillance images of the suspect, described as a Black man aged between 20 and 30, in hopes of identifying him. The Savannah Police Department has not yet responded to requests for comment. It is still unknown if the BMW has been recovered since the August incident.
