Malaysian Teen Arrested After Livestreamed Axe Attack on Teacher in Sarawak
A 16-year-old student is detained following a livestreamed axe attack at an international school in Sarawak, Malaysia, as officials urge compassion.
POLICY WIRE — Kuching, Malaysia — A 16-year-old student has been placed under arrest following an alleged axe attack directed at a female teacher inside an international school located in Malaysia’s Sarawak state. Authorities reported that the violent episode was broadcast live across social media platforms.
Law enforcement in Sarawak received an emergency distress call at approximately 8.03am. The caller reported that a pupil had brought firecrackers onto campus and inflicted injuries on an educator using an axe.
The targeted educator sustained injuries specifically to her hand during the confrontation. Video recordings of the Facebook livestream spanned roughly 12 minutes before the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission intervened to have the digital media removed.
The captured footage appeared to originate from a mobile device strapped directly to the teenager’s head. The recording showed the minor retrieving an axe and a lighter from his schoolbag inside a restroom before sprinting toward a classroom where the assault subsequently unfolded.
The visual feed grew unstable during the ensuing chaos before turning completely black, though audio of persistent screams remained audible. Following the intervention, the youth was taken into custody and admitted to the psychiatric ward at Sarawak General Hospital to undergo formal psychological evaluations.
Police investigators are actively working to determine the underlying motive behind the classroom assault. Authorities have scheduled a formal press conference to provide further updates on Oct 27.
In response to the tragedy, Sarawak’s Minister of Women, Children and Community Well-being Development Fatimah Abdullah issued a public appeal on Thursday. She cautioned citizens against rushing to condemn, label, or shame the minor without fully grasping the context of the situation.
Any incident involving violence or the use of a weapon must be taken seriously and addressed appropriately to protect the entire school community, Fatimah stated via a social media post. She emphasized that the situation requires a delicate balance of careful evaluation and empathy.
The adolescent involved is still growing and developing, Fatimah noted. Accountability and compassion are not mutually exclusive, she added, explaining that officials can simultaneously safeguard teachers and students while treating the youth with dignity and securing necessary guidance.
Furthermore, the minister strongly advised the public to halt the circulation of the attack footage. She warned that sharing the digital recordings inflicts additional distress, subjects victims and witnesses to online harassment, and severely violates personal privacy.
Social media must not become a platform for public shaming or trial by public opinion, Fatimah concluded.
