Malaysian Customs Intercepts $12.1 Million in Illicit AI Chips at Kuala Lumpur Airport
Malaysian authorities seized $12.1 million in advanced AI chips hidden in server units at Kuala Lumpur airport, uncovering a major semiconductor smuggling ring.
POLICY WIRE — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Malaysian customs officials announced on Wednesday the successful seizure of advanced artificial intelligence chips valued at approximately 49.5 million ringgit, or $12.11 million. The operation targeted a smuggling syndicate attempting to move high-performance semiconductors through the nation’s primary air cargo hub.
The confiscated hardware was discovered concealed within 30 server units at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Authorities noted that the shipment had been falsely declared as standard electronic components to bypass strict export control regulations.
This enforcement action comes as Malaysia intensifies its oversight of semiconductor transit trade. The government implemented new export controls last year to regulate the movement of advanced technology, and officials are now investigating the broader network linked to this illicit shipment.
