Malaysia Weighs Return to Formula 1 Hosting Circuit
Malaysia is evaluating the economic feasibility of bringing Formula 1 back to the Sepang International Circuit, with a government decision expected by November.
POLICY WIRE — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — The Malaysian government is actively exploring the possibility of rejoining the Formula 1 calendar, potentially as a recurring host or through a collaborative partnership with another nation.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari confirmed that officials are currently conducting a comprehensive review of the financial implications and economic advantages associated with hosting the premier racing series. This assessment is slated for presentation to the Cabinet by the end of November.
The potential revival of the Malaysian Grand Prix follows a surge in public interest and strong spectator attendance at the Sepang International Circuit. The venue recently hosted F1 action as a replacement for the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix, reigniting discussions about the country’s future in the sport.
Minister Johari noted that the government committee is tasked with evaluating the total costs, potential economic returns, and feasibility of the project before a final determination is made. The findings will be presented to the Dewan to guide the national strategy.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has publicly encouraged the government to pursue the return of hosting rights, provided that the recent event at Sepang demonstrates long-term viability and success.
