Major Equipment Failure Triggers Widespread Flight Delays Across NYC Airports

POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — A significant equipment failure at a regional air traffic control facility has triggered widespread flight disruptions across the New York City metropolitan area, impacting operations at Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the technical issues are causing a ripple effect throughout the region’s airspace. A ground stop was initially implemented for Newark at approximately 10 a.m. Monday, with officials extending the order multiple times through at least 2:45 p.m.

Additional ground stops were mandated for JFK at 12:38 p.m., scheduled to remain in effect until 3 p.m. LaGuardia faced a similar directive issued at 12:43 p.m., which is currently slated to expire at 9:59 p.m.

An FAA spokesperson explained that the agency is pausing incoming flights to Philadelphia International, Teterboro, and Newark Liberty International due to complications with specific frequencies at the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON). This facility is responsible for utilizing radar and radio communications to manage aircraft arrivals and departures.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford identified the root cause as a failure of the primary circuit at the Philadelphia TRACON, compounded by a break in the backup line. Bedford noted that the damage, located between New Brunswick and Newark, is significant, stating, That fiber break is probably 13 hours to repair. it is massive, I’m told.

Crews are currently working to install a new circuit to restore normal operations. In the meantime, the FAA advises all passengers to contact their respective airlines directly for the most current updates regarding individual flight statuses.
