Kremlin Hopes US Envoy Steve Witkoff Can Soon Brief Putin on Ukraine Peace Proposals
Kremlin expresses hope that US envoy Steve Witkoff will soon brief Vladimir Putin on updated Ukraine peace proposals and European diplomatic discussions.
POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — The Kremlin stated on Tuesday that it anticipates a meeting will soon take place in Russia between President Vladimir Putin and United States special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Officials in Moscow indicated the prospective discussions would center on the ongoing Ukraine peace process alongside a series of critical matters.
The announcement follows talks in Moscow where Russian President Vladimir Putin met with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at the Kremlin on Saturday to help revive stalled efforts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
Kushner joined Witkoff for the diplomatic discussions, which commenced shortly after 5 p.m. local time.
Witkoff, serving as the designated lead U.S. negotiator regarding Ukraine, is expected to deliver President Trump’s updated peace initiatives and provide Putin with updates concerning recent conversations with Kyiv.
According to Bloomberg reports, Witkoff was previously recorded coaching Kremlin officials on how to navigate negotiations to secure a favorable deal.
Prior to these high-level meetings, a White House envoy described separate discussions held in Florida with Ukrainian and European representatives as productive and constructive regarding the nearly four-year conflict.
In anticipation of the diplomatic visit, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a 72-hour halt on strikes directed at Kyiv.
Despite the temporary pause in military action, a spokesperson for the Russian president maintained that no discussions regarding brand-new concepts to resolve the conflict took place.
