POLICY WIRE — Mombasa, Kenya — A court in Mombasa has ordered the sentencing of Paul Mackenzie, the head of a doomsday cult, after his conviction for the murders of 191 individuals, including 190 children.
Mackenzie, who styled himself as a pastor of the Good News International Church, was found guilty of directing followers to deprive their children of food in an effort to fulfill a promised meeting with Jesus.
The trial concluded with judge Diana Kavedza confirming the death toll of 191 victims, noting that only one adult survived the mass starvation.
Sentencing is scheduled for 6 November, where the court will determine the appropriate punishment for the self‑proclaimed preacher and his accomplices.
