Kemi Badenoch Slams Trump, Claims US President Deserved Election Defeat
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch condemns Donald Trump's 'dirty' political style and suggests his US midterm defeat was a self-inflicted consequence.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has launched a sharp critique of Donald Trump, asserting the former US President deserved a decisive electoral defeat and characterizing his political approach as ‘dirty’.
In a detailed assessment of the American leader’s tenure, Badenoch criticized his involvement in the Iran War, his rhetoric toward Canada and Greenland, the implementation of heavy tariffs, and friction with allies like the United Kingdom.
Speaking to Independent Editor-in-Chief Geordie Greig, Badenoch argued that the significant loss in US midterm elections was the result of Trump’s own actions.
In a controversial admission, the Tory leader stated she would have been satisfied if Kamala Harris had won the presidency in 2024 instead of Trump returning for a second term.
The interview, which aired on The Talk Show, also saw Badenoch target her Conservative predecessors, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, for their various failures in government.
Regarding domestic UK politics, she described Andy Burnham as being more entertaining than Keir Starmer, though she warned that his outward charm masks a ‘dangerous’ nature.
Badenoch dismissed Nigel Farage’s Reform Party as ‘bonkers’ and explicitly stated she would not join a Conservative-Reform coalition led by him.
However, she acknowledged that before his recent popularity declined, Farage successfully established an emotional bond with the electorate that the Conservatives failed to replicate until she took the reins of the party.
Badenoch’s harsh stance on Trump’s policies and personality may surprise some segments of her base who expected her to emulate his style after his victories.
When asked directly if Trump deserved his electoral beating, Badenoch responded affirmatively, noting that he failed to act in a manner she would consider conservative.
She observed that while Trump can be charming in person, his treatment of journalists and other individuals does not meet the standards expected of a statesman.
Badenoch also expressed deep disapproval of Trump’s treatment of President Zelensky and questioned his focus on protectionism over free markets and international trade.
She further noted that Trump originally secured power through a unique coalition of Black and Latino voters, an opportunity she believes he squandered.
The Conservative leader revealed a preference for Kamala Harris over Trump, stating she liked both politicians equally, but maintained that Trump’s midterm loss was a self-inflicted consequence of his mistakes.
Addressing the state of her own party, she blamed Johnson and Truss for gimmicks and short-term thinking, specifically attacking Truss’s budget which included £45 billion in tax cuts without corresponding spending reductions.
Badenoch, who identifies as a Methodist, invoked St. Augustine regarding hating the sin but loving the sinner when refusing to personally attack her former colleagues, despite criticizing their records.
She defended her aggressive parliamentary style, describing the Commons as a ‘kill or be killed’ arena where fighters are necessary to handle a vocal Labour opposition.
The leader also refused to apologize for calling Bridget Phillipson ‘spiteful’ regarding the impact of VAT on private school fees, labeling the policy a form of ‘class war’ that harmed children.
Finally, Badenoch expressed confidence that she is outperforming Farage in the polls, claiming the Conservatives have narrowed the gap with Labour while the Reform leader faces various internal scandals.
