POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Jingye Group, the Chinese conglomerate that previously owned British Steel, has formally requested compensation from the UK government for financial losses incurred following the nationalisation of the steel manufacturer.

The British government assumed operational control of British Steel last week after Jingye Group announced its intention to close the blast furnaces at the Scunthorpe plant in northern England. This plant is the last in the UK capable of producing “virgin steel” from raw materials.

In a statement released via WeChat, Jingye Group outlined its demand for compensation, asserting significant investment losses due to the nationalisation process.

The UK government’s decision to nationalise British Steel came after prolonged discussions with Jingye Group, which had expressed concerns over the viability of maintaining operations at the Scunthorpe site.
