Indonesian Ferry Fire Tragedy: Five Dead, Dozens Missing

POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — At least five individuals have been confirmed dead and dozens are reported missing following a ferry fire off the coast of Indonesia. The incident occurred when the vessel, carrying an unknown number of passengers, caught fire early Thursday morning.

The Indonesian National Search — and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) is leading the ongoing rescue efforts. A video released by BASARNAS shows the ferry engulfed in flames, with emergency responders working to evacuate survivors and recover the deceased.

“We’re doing everything we can to rescue those still missing and to provide support to the families affected by this tragedy,” said a BASARNAS official.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are working to determine the exact number of passengers on board and the circumstances leading to the incident.

This disaster comes amid heightened concerns over maritime safety in the region, where ferry accidents are not uncommon due to aging infrastructure and often inadequate safety measures.
