Indian Markets Slip as Oil Prices Surge; Jio Platforms Sees Strong Market Debut
Indian equity benchmarks Nifty 50 and Sensex decline amid rising oil costs and Fed anticipation, while Jio Platforms surges 21% in its market debut.
POLICY WIRE — Mumbai, India — Indian equity benchmarks retreated on Wednesday as climbing crude oil prices dampened investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 index slipped 0.22% to close at 22,698.85, while the Sensex dropped 0.48% to finish at 73,246.03.
Market participants remained cautious throughout the session, closely monitoring global macroeconomic cues and the impending policy decision from the US Federal Reserve. The rise in oil prices, which topped $115 per barrel, served as a primary headwind for domestic risk appetite.
Despite the broader market downturn, the spotlight remained on the highly anticipated stock market debut of Jio Platforms. The telecom and digital services unit, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani and backed by major investors including Meta and Google, saw its shares surge 21% during its first day of trading.
The company, which successfully raised $3.2 billion in its initial public offering, is now positioned as India’s fourth-largest listed firm by market capitalization. The debut followed a record-breaking IPO process that saw the offering fully subscribed within hours of its launch.
