POLICY WIRE — Miami, United States — The first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic season, Isaias, is rapidly gaining strength as it heads toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, prompting widespread evacuations and emergency preparations in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.
The National Hurricane Center reported that Isaias had maximum sustained winds of around 75 mph (121 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 9 mph (15 kph) early Thursday. It was located about 445 miles (715 kilometers) south-southwest of the Mississippi River’s mouth, with landfall expected late Friday or early Saturday along the northern Gulf Coast.

Residents from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to Gulf County, Florida, were warned of potential long-duration power outages and life-threatening storm surges.
