Houston Mayor Restricts Police Cooperation with ICE Following Democratic Election Wins
Mayor John Whitmire signs executive order to limit Houston PD cooperation with ICE, focusing on public safety rather than minor offenses.
POLICY WIRE — Houston, Texas — Houston Mayor John Whitmire issued a directive on Friday instructing the Houston Police Department to scale back interactions with federal immigration agencies.
The mayor described the shift as the beginning of a new model for immigration enforcement, noting that the decision comes after Democrats regained political power across Texas for the first time in decades.
Under the new policy, city authorities will prioritize enforcement efforts only for immigrants who are identified as a genuine threat to public safety.
The city will now cease routine communication with federal immigration officials regarding individuals detained for minor or non-violent offenses.
This policy reversal follows a period of tension between local and state leadership. Previously, a city ordinance limiting police assistance to federal agents had been modified under pressure from Governor Abbott.
The governor had formerly threatened to withhold millions of dollars in grants intended for public safety if the city did not cooperate with federal authorities.
Whitmire emphasized that the recent midterm results were a primary factor in this pivot, stating that elections matter.
