POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong, Hong Kong — Joshua Wong, a prominent figure who once served as the face of the city’s pro-democracy struggle, was sentenced to an additional 10 years of incarceration on Thursday.

The sentencing follows a conviction related to collusion with foreign entities under the region’s stringent national security legislation. Wong pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

Having gained international fame as a teenage activist, the campaigner is now expected to spend a significant portion of his adult life behind bars.

The legal proceedings are part of a broader crackdown involving 47 other opposition figures who were charged in 2021 for violating the same security laws.

This new term marks a major development for Wong, who remains a central symbol of the movement for political reform in Hong Kong.
