History Made: Diatta Secures First Ever Olympic Gold for Senegal in Dakar
16-year-old Elisabeth Diatta wins Senegal's first-ever Olympic gold in beach wrestling at the Dakar Youth Olympic Games, making history.
POLICY WIRE — Dakar, Senegal — Senegal achieved a historic milestone on Saturday by securing its very first gold medal at an Olympic event, competing in the national sport of beach wrestling.
Sixteen-year-old Elisabeth Diatta claimed the title in the women’s 55-kilogram division. She defeated Japan’s Reisa Kojima with a masterful takedown in front of a cheering home crowd.
Following her victory, Diatta expressed her immense joy at being able to make history for her country.
The beach wrestling competition marked its Olympic debut at the Youth Olympic Games, currently being hosted across the capital of Dakar and the neighboring areas of Diamniadio and Saly. The tournament features athletes aged between 14 and 17.
Wrestling is deeply ingrained in the culture of this West African nation, where athletes are treated with the status of celebrities. The local tradition, known as laamb in the Wolof language, has been a staple of village life for centuries.
While many matches are held for entertainment or to mark celebrations, the professional tier of the sport attracts thousands of spectators and can provide a pathway to significant fame and wealth.
In the coastal town of Saly, Senegalese competitors honored traditional laamb customs by performing victory dances after their wins, while fans accompanied the team with the rhythm of traditional sabar drums.
Although the sport is predominantly male in Senegal, the Jola ethnic group in the southern Casamance region has a long history of women wrestling alongside the men.
Hailing from Casamance, Diatta told The Associated Press that she hopes her win inspires girls in Senegal to believe in their potential and recognize that wrestling is not limited solely to men.
Her coach, Isabelle Sambu—a two-time Olympian and nine-time African champion—noted that a female winning the nation’s first gold was a powerful symbol. Sambu stated they have opened doors for the remaining disciplines and expressed hope for more medals to follow.
Just one hour after Diatta’s triumph, 16-year-old Maguette Diop earned Senegal’s second gold medal by defeating Azerbaijan’s Nihad Suleymanli in the 80-kilogram final.
