Hakeem Jeffries Declares Support for Impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries signals firm support for the impeachment of Pete Hegseth as Democrats prepare to take control of Congress.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced Sunday his definitive support for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The New York Democrat, who is widely expected to become House Speaker following the upcoming shift in power in January, described his stance as a “hard yes” regarding the removal of the Secretary.
The push to remove Hegseth from his post has gained momentum following Democratic victories in the recent midterm elections.
Jeffries was clear about his position on the situation, stating that the Secretary has to go.
The top Democrat indicated he intends to discuss the impeachment proceedings with other lawmakers as the process moves forward.
The legislative effort is currently being spearheaded by Republican Representative Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky). Massie aims to introduce a formal resolution for an impeachment vote as early as Monday.
While some Democrats are fully aligned, GOP Representative French Hill (R-PA) suggested a more measured approach. Hill noted he would evaluate whether Hegseth’s conduct warrants formal impeachment or a different form of disciplinary measure.
