POLICY WIRE — New York, USA — At the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, world leaders voiced concerns over the organization’s effectiveness in addressing pressing global challenges, from climate change to artificial intelligence. Despite calls for multilateral cooperation, many expressed frustration with the lack of progress and the dominance of a few powerful nations.
The theme of the gathering was restoring trust, with leaders emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and cooperative international system. Smaller nations, particularly island states and African countries, called for greater representation and decision-making power within the U.N., arguing that current structures are outdated and unresponsive to modern threats.
While the U.N. remains a symbol of global unity, the weeklong meeting highlighted deep divisions and skepticism about its ability to act decisively. Many leaders urged the organization to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to address global issues, including climate change, AI governance, and geopolitical conflicts.
