German Police Seize Humanoid Robot Following Alleged Sexual Harassment Incident
German authorities have confiscated a humanoid robot after it allegedly groped a teenager in Cologne. Investigators are probing potential criminal intent.
POLICY WIRE — Berlin, Germany — German law enforcement officials have confiscated a humanoid robot following allegations that the machine inappropriately touched a 16-year-old girl and performed sexually suggestive gestures.
Authorities are currently investigating whether the robot’s movements were intentionally manipulated by two young men who reportedly livestreamed the encounter on social media.
The incident took place shortly before midnight on Oct. 10 near a fast-food establishment located on a busy nightlife street in Cologne. According to a police statement issued Monday, the robot, which stands approximately 4 feet tall and is painted red and gold, approached the teenager from behind while she was accompanied by two friends, aged 17 and 18.
Footage circulating online appears to depict the robot making physical contact with the girl’s buttocks and engaging in repeated thrusting motions. Police identified the owners of the device as a 16-year-old male and his 19-year-old companion, who allegedly recorded and provided live commentary during the event.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the robot stored inside the trunk of a Volkswagen. Both the machine and the suspects’ smartphones were seized as evidence.
The robot is described as a commercially available model with a market value of approximately 5,000 euros, or about $5,600. While one of the suspects claimed on TikTok that the contact was an accidental collision, extended video clips appear to show the machine performing suggestive movements.
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage and online recordings to determine if the robot was operated remotely, pre-programmed, or acting autonomously. The case presents unique legal hurdles, as German sexual harassment laws typically require direct physical contact between human beings.
Consequently, police are pursuing the case under the suspicion of a sexually motivated insult, with potential additional charges related to the unauthorized distribution of images. No formal charges have been filed against the two suspects at this time.
This event underscores emerging challenges for law enforcement as advanced robotics become more accessible to the public, raising complex questions regarding legal liability when machines are utilized in potential criminal activity.
