French Teen Fined S$600 for Viral Straw-Licking Prank in Singapore
A French teenager was fined S$600 (US$465) for public nuisance after a video of him licking a straw and returning it to a vending machine went viral.
POLICY WIRE — Singapore — A French teenager, Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 19, has been fined S$600 (US$465) by a Singapore court for committing public nuisance. Maximilien pleaded guilty to the charge after a video of him licking a straw and returning it to an iJooz vending machine went viral.
The incident occurred when Maximilien’s actions were recorded by someone in his Instagram circle and subsequently shared with a media outlet. The video’s viral spread led to the public nuisance charge. In addition to the public nuisance count, a second charge of mischief was taken into consideration during the court proceedings.
Maximilien attended a social event on March 12 where the incident took place. The court’s decision underscores Singapore’s stringent stance on behavior that disrupts public order — and hygiene.
