French Startups Challenge AI Giants with Affordable Open-Weight Models
French startups Mistral and Reflection aim to disrupt AI dominance with open-weight models at lower costs, offering control and customization.
POLICY WIRE — Paris, France — A French startup is challenging the global AI giants by introducing a new model that claims to offer comparable performance at a fraction of the cost. Mistral, based in Paris, has launched its latest AI model, ML4, which it describes as the best open-weight system available.
Open-weight models allow users to access and modify the underlying code, providing more flexibility compared to closed systems like ChatGPT or Gemini. Mistral’s VP of Science, Pierre Stock, stated that ML4 matches top-tier closed models in areas such as cyber defense, finance, and manufacturing tasks.

The company built the model using significantly less computing power than its competitors, reducing both development and user costs. However, CNN could not independently verify these claims. Despite entering a market dominated by major players, Mistral argues that its European origin provides an alternative to the China-US AI duopoly, appealing to businesses seeking greater control over their technology.
