POLICY WIRE — Moscow, Russia — A former Russian minister has warned that the country could face a new revolution due to mounting economic pressures and repeated attacks by Ukraine on key industries, including oil refineries and the largest retailer, Wildberries.
The warning comes as Ukraine has intensified its strikes on Russian economic targets this summer. These attacks have disrupted operations at major oil refineries and impacted the supply chain of Wildberries, one of Russia’s largest online retailers.
The former minister, whose identity remains undisclosed for security reasons, stated, “The cumulative effect of these attacks, coupled with existing economic challenges, could lead to significant unrest. The population’s patience is wearing thin, and the government must act swiftly to stabilize the situation.”
Russian authorities have yet to comment on the minister’s warning. However, the Kremlin has previously acknowledged the impact of Ukrainian attacks on the country’s infrastructure but maintains that the situation is under control.
The economic strain is further exacerbated by international sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. These sanctions have limited Russia’s access to global markets and disrupted trade relations with several countries.
In response to the economic challenges, the Russian government has implemented several measures aimed at stabilizing the economy. These include increasing state control over critical industries, providing financial support to affected businesses, and exploring alternative trade routes.
Despite these efforts, the former minister’s warning underscores the growing concern about the potential for civil unrest. The minister urged the government to address the root causes of the economic strain and engage in dialogue with the public to prevent a escalation of the situation.
