Residents of Rio de Janeiro were caught off guard when winds reaching up to 100 km/h struck just before rush hour. The intense winds felled dozens of trees — and left thousands stranded as the city’s subway system ground to a halt.

The fire department reported that two individuals died when a wall collapsed in the city. Further details on the other fatalities haven’t been immediately disclosed.
