POLICY WIRE — Buenos Aires, Argentina — FIFA has imposed bans on several Argentine players following a violent altercation during the recent World Cup. Additionally, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has been fined for displaying a controversial banner referencing the Falklands Islands.
The incident occurred during a heated match, leading to multiple players being sent off. Giovani Lo Celso was notably involved, holding a banner that read “The Malvinas are Argentine,” which has drawn significant international attention.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced the sanctions, stating that the players’ actions were in violation of the organization’s code of conduct. The specific durations of the bans have not been disclosed, but the committee emphasized the need for maintaining sportsmanship and decorum during international matches.
The AFA has been fined an undisclosed amount for allowing the banner, which FIFA deemed to be a political statement inappropriate for a sporting event. The association has yet to comment on the fine or the player bans.
This incident adds to the long-standing geopolitical tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina.
