Federal Prosecutor Accuses DOJ Official of Directing Case That Ended Her Career
Prosecutor Sheri Mecklenburg claims U.S. Attorney Boutros personally led Broadview Six prosecution, leading to her resignation.
POLICY WIRE — Chicago, United States — A federal prosecutor has resigned from the Department of Justice after accusing a senior official of directing the prosecution that ended her career.
Sheri Mecklenburg, who led the grand jury proceedings against six protesters arrested near an ICE facility in Chicago during Operation Midway Blitz in 2025, claimed that U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros personally oversaw the felony charges against them. She detailed these allegations in a public resignation letter published by The New York Times.
The case against the protesters collapsed in two stages, with felony charges dismissed first and then misdemeanor charges also dropped after misconduct allegations surfaced. Boutros acknowledged the misconduct but did not dispute the accusations, stating that the actions were the reason for the dismissal. Mecklenburg alleged she was unfairly blamed for the outcome and denied knowledge of key court proceedings.
