POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — A federal judge has intervened to temporarily halt the construction of President Donald Trump’s proposed triumphal arch, coming shortly after the project received an official green light.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a temporary restraining order requiring a 14-day pause on all work regarding the structure. This legal maneuver allows the court to review lawsuits challenging the legality of the massive project.
The ruling represents a significant hurdle for the project, which is a centerpiece of Trump’s vision to transform the landscape of the capital. The intended 250-foot monument is slated to be located near Arlington National Cemetery.
The judicial block occurred just hours after the National Capital Planning Commission voted on Thursday to approve the architectural plans. Despite the commission’s approval, the administration had intended to begin construction operations immediately.
While the President launched a dedicated website for the arch coinciding with the legal developments, the court’s order ensures no ground is broken while the legal merits of the project are litigated in federal court.
