FAA Clears Trump Arch Plan, Says It Won’t Disrupt D.C. Airport Flights
FAA confirms Trump arch won't affect Washington Reagan National Airport flight paths, amid safety concerns and political backlash.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that President Trump’s proposed triumphal arch near Arlington Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial will not pose a risk to aircraft operating at Washington Reagan National Airport.
The agency stated that the structure would have no significant impact on airport airspace or navigation systems, and emphasized that it must be notified at least 10 days before construction begins. Public feedback had raised concerns about potential effects on airport capacity and pilot workload, but the FAA found no issues.
The 260-foot arch, set to begin construction in the coming days, has drawn sharp criticism for its placement in a high-traffic flight path. Democratic lawmakers, including Senator Tammy Duckworth, have called the project unsafe, especially after a deadly crash occurred at the airport just over a year ago. Despite these concerns, the FAA concluded that the structure would not interfere with flight operations, though it requires obstruction lights for visibility.
