POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The UK government has announced an extension of the 16-17 Saver railcard eligibility to include 18-year-olds. Effective immediately, individuals aged up to 18 can now purchase the railcard, which offers a 50% discount on rail travel.

Previously, the 16-17 Saver railcard was only available to individuals under the age of 18. This extension allows young travelers to continue benefiting from reduced rail fares until the day before their 19th birthday.

The railcard costs £30 — and is valid for one year. It provides significant savings for frequent travelers, making rail transport a more affordable option for young people.

A Department for Transport spokesperson stated, “We’re committed to making rail travel accessible and affordable for all. Extending the 16-17 Saver railcard to 18-year-olds is a step towards supporting young people as they transition into adulthood and continue their education or enter the workforce.”
