POLICY WIRE — Brussels, Europe — The European Union has taken steps to calm concerns in Greenland following repeated assertions by former U.S. President Donald Trump that the United States should assume control of the island.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a two-year commitment of 200 million euros ($232 million) during a visit to Nuuk, aiming to assist with climate change mitigation, digital infrastructure expansion, hydropower development, fisheries, and education initiatives.

The EU’s increased attention to Greenland follows Trump’s persistent claims about the territory’s strategic importance, which have raised alarms among Danish and Greenlandic leaders. Von der Leyen emphasized that Greenland’s future is for its people and Denmark to determine, while also pledging to double EU funding to around half a billion euros from 2028 onward.
