Edwin Lopez-Cornejo: Another ICE Detainee Death Sparks Outrage

POLICY WIRE — Newark, NJ — Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old detainee held at Delaney Hall in Newark, has died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration — and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Lopez-Cornejo was arrested on June 18 — and had been detained at the facility since then.

The death of Lopez-Cornejo has reignited calls from activists and advocacy groups to shut down Delaney Hall, citing ongoing concerns about the conditions and treatment of detainees.

“This is another tragic example of the dangers faced by individuals in immigration detention,” said Maria Chavez, spokesperson for the Immigrant Rights Coalition. “We call for an immediate investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Lopez-Cornejo’s death — and urge authorities to consider closing this facility permanently.”

ICE has confirmed the death but hasn’t provided specific details regarding the cause. The agency stated that it’s conducting a review of the incident. “ICE is committed to the health and safety of those in our care and will cooperate fully with any investigations,” an ICE spokesperson said.

Lopez-Cornejo’s death is the latest in a series of incidents that have drawn attention to the conditions within U.S. immigration detention centers. Advocates argue that overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and insufficient oversight contribute to a hazardous environment for detainees.

The Newark facility has faced previous criticism. In 2021, a report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) highlighted issues such as inadequate medical attention and unsanitary conditions at Delaney Hall.

“We have long sounded the alarm about the deplorable conditions at Delaney Hall,” said ACLU attorney Sarah Lee. “Mr. Lopez-Cornejo’s death is a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform and, ultimately, the closure of this facility.”

Local officials have also weighed in on the matter. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called for a thorough investigation into the death. “We must ensure that every individual detained in our city is treated with dignity — and respect,” he said.

As the investigation proceeds, family members of Lopez-Cornejo are seeking answers. “We demand justice — and transparency,” said a relative who wished to remain anonymous. “Edwin didn’t deserve to die like this.”
