Duchess of Sussex Deeply Distressed Over Allegations Involving Estranged Father
Meghan expresses deep distress over reports regarding her estranged father, Thomas Markle, confirming police informed her of disturbing allegations in 2018.
POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, announced on Friday that she experienced profound distress regarding a report claiming her estranged father, Thomas Markle, possessed child sexual abuse images, while noting that police informed her of disturbing claims against him back in 2018.
During her Friday statement, Meghan responded to investigations concerning allegations that her father maintained child sexual abuse media at his residence located in the Philippines.
British tabloid newspaper The Sun initially broke the story, detailing how Markle’s son alerted law enforcement after discovering a collection of illicit files. The publication featured a photograph depicting Thomas Jr. signing a sworn statement provided to officers alongside a quote from Markle Jr. vowing never to speak to his father again unless summoned to testify.
Meanwhile, Thomas Markle Sr. issued a statement to the British newspaper Daily Mail strongly rejecting the reported accusations as sick lies, characterizing them as the most severe accusation anyone could level against him.
Meghan shares a long-standing and strained dynamic with her father, who ultimately missed her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Thomas Markle Sr. wed Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, in 1979 before their eventual divorce in 1987.
Within her rare public statement, Meghan explained that she deliberately maintained distance between her father and her children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, for the sole purpose of safeguarding them.
The duchess expressed deep distress over the newly surfaced details while offering her thoughts to any children potentially impacted by harm.
Meghan recalled learning about correspondence delivered to British law enforcement and additional agencies in 2018 that raised troubling and disturbing allegations against her father, receiving assurances at the time that authorities were actively examining the matter.
She emphasized that despite years of media distortion regarding her family dynamics, her choice to keep her children away from her father stems entirely from a desire to protect them.
While describing the newly uncovered scope as sickening beyond imagination, Meghan expressed sincere hope for full justice and stressed that the primary focus must remain on the safety and protection of innocent children.
Meghan, 45, and Harry, 42, relocated back to the United Kingdom earlier this summer following a multi-year stay in the United States.
The couple made their initial joint public appearance last week by visiting charitable organizations situated in central England. King Charles III has explicitly indicated that their relocation does not entail a return to official working royal duties, though Prince Harry recently expressed a desire to resolve his family disputes.
