Drone Attack in Manipur: Government’s Failure to Control Escalating Violence

The government of India has utterly failed to restore peace and maintain order in Manipur, allowing the violence to spiral out of control with every passing day. Despite a massive deployment of security forces, the situation continues to worsen, and the people of Manipur are left to face an ever-growing tide of bloodshed and insecurity. The government’s hollow promises of safety and stability have proven to be nothing more than empty rhetoric, while the state descends into chaos.

The latest incident on the night of January 14, 2025, underscores the government’s sheer incompetence. Two bombs exploded in Kangchup Phayeng, a Meitei-dominated area in Imphal West, in what appears to be a drone attack. Dropped with military precision, these bombs exploded a mere 15 feet away from a temporary security barrack and sentry post of the Manipur police. While no casualties were reported, this attack highlights the frightening sophistication of militants who now have the means to strike with impunity from the skies. This incident is not an isolated one but part of a larger pattern of ever-increasing violence and terror that the government seems completely unable to stop.

The attack on January 14, 2025, mirrors a similar drone bombing in November 2024, which sent shockwaves through the region. Despite these warning signs, the government has failed to address the growing threat posed by drones, allowing militants to strike without resistance. What’s worse, despite repeated sightings of drones, the authorities have failed to act. The people of Manipur, living in a state of constant fear, have seen the government’s indifference firsthand. “We didn’t panic, assuming they were surveillance drones,” said Ajit, a local resident, highlighting the growing frequency of these aerial threats. The inability of the government to secure the skies has left Manipur defenseless against the increasingly bold actions of insurgents.

On January 15, 2025, the situation took an even darker turn as a massive cache of arms, explosives, and ammunition was seized from the fringes of Aigejang and Leimaram Uyok Ching in Bishnupur district. This arms haul included deadly weapons like sniper rifles, SLR rifles, mortar tube launchers, grenades, and explosives—revealing the alarming preparedness of the militants. What’s even more disturbing is that this discovery came only after extensive intelligence reports about armed insurgents and hidden weapon caches. This begs the question: how many more such weapons are still lurking in the region, waiting to be used against the innocent?

Despite the government deploying nearly 60,000 central security forces across Manipur, these insurgents remain well-armed, organized, and capable of carrying out highly sophisticated operations. The government’s military presence has done nothing to quell the violence or restore peace. The insurgents grow bolder, and the people of Manipur are forced to live in terror, day after day. “We don’t want compensation after injuries or deaths caused by militant attacks,” said Ajit, “We want peace to be restored with the help of the nearly 60,000 central forces reportedly deployed in Manipur.” This is the voice of the people—a cry for action, not empty promises.

The time for excuses is over. The government’s failure to address the root causes of the conflict, to manage the crisis, and to protect its citizens is glaringly evident. The repeated attacks, the increasing sophistication of militant tactics, and the discovery of weapon caches all point to one irrefutable conclusion: the government has failed. The people of Manipur are left to fend for themselves, with the state offering nothing but indifference, incompetence, and ineffective responses.

The attacks in Kangchup Phayeng and the discovery of weapon caches are only the latest chapters in this tragic saga. The government’s inability to secure the region, protect its citizens, and curtail the escalating violence has put the people of Manipur at grave risk. The government’s continuous failure to act is pushing the state closer to anarchy. The people of Manipur deserve better than this neglect, this incompetence. They deserve real action, not the hollow promises of a government that is unwilling or unable to secure the safety of its own citizens. The people are crying out for change, but will the government listen before it’s too late?
