Dramatic Truck Crash Leaves Cab Dangling Over California Bridge, Driver Injured

POLICY WIRE — Truckee, California — A tractor-trailer truck crashed through a railing on Interstate 80 near Truckee, California, leaving its cab hanging 80 feet over a bridge and injuring the driver.

The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. on Friday near Floriston Way, just west of the California-Nevada border, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The crash resulted in the closure of all eastbound lanes for several hours.

Photographs from CHP showed the overturned tractor-trailer precariously balanced over the bridge edge, with the cab suspended in midair and the freeway railing severely damaged. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The driver was ejected from the truck and sustained injuries, as reported by South Tahoe Now. An air-and-ground ambulance service, Care Flight, was summoned to transport the injured driver.

CHP estimated around 12:30 p.m. that the road closure would persist for approximately two more hours. The timing of the crash was particularly inconvenient for Bay Area travelers en route to Nevada for the Burning Man festival, which was scheduled to commence on Sunday in Black Rock City and usually attracts around 80,000 attendees.

Subsequent updates revealed that crews managed to detach the tractor from its trailer, allowing most of the highway to reopen. However, cleanup efforts continued, and at least one eastbound lane remained closed temporarily.

By 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, all eastbound lanes of I-80 near Floriston had been reopened. The Independent has reached out to CHP for further comment.
