Disgraced Former Representative George Santos Pitches Himself for White House Press Secretary Role
George Santos pitches himself to serve as White House press secretary following the abrupt departure of Katie Zacharia after a record-short five-day tenure.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Former Republican Representative George Santos has publicly offered himself as a candidate to replace White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, following the sudden announcement of her departure.
Taking to social media on Friday, Santos shared that while he currently holds a job, he would seize the opportunity to serve the president as press secretary immediately.
The vacancy opened up after a White House official confirmed on Friday afternoon that Zacharia was stepping down from her role.
President Donald Trump informed reporters that he had suggested she reconsider her position following a turbulent five-day tenure, establishing her as the shortest-serving press secretary in White House history.
Zacharia drew heavy scrutiny throughout her brief time in the spotlight, particularly after a rocky initial press briefing where she accepted only three questions and mischaracterized herself as a lawyer despite never passing the bar exam.
Before throwing his hat in the ring for the administration post, Santos launched a public critique of Fox News host Sean Hannity, who had aggressively interrogated Zacharia regarding her legal credentials during a Thursday interview.
In a profane social media post, Santos rebuked the television anchor for judging others from a pedestal of self-righteousness, later following up on Friday evening to encourage his supporters to unfollow anyone viewing Hannity as a moral compass.
This public feud marks the latest friction between Santos and the television personality, who previously pressed the former congressman during an interview about whether he planned to reimburse his financial victims following his release from federal prison last autumn.
Santos offered an apology during that television appearance but declined to commit to repaying the stolen funds.
The former lawmaker was ousted from Congress in 2023 ahead of his conviction on multiple charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, though President Trump commuted his sentence last October after he served three months behind bars.
Controversy has continued to follow Santos since his departure from official public office.
In August, prediction market platform Kalshi imposed a lifetime ban on Santos after he refused to cooperate with a probe into bets he placed concerning the State of the Union address.
