Deadly Cross-Border Clashes Erupt Between Pakistani Forces and Afghan Taliban
Fatal mortar fire hits Pakistan's Waziristan region as border tensions escalate into large-scale military exchanges between Afghan and Pakistani forces.
POLICY WIRE — Islamabad, Pakistan — A violent escalation along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan has left one civilian dead and five others wounded. The casualties occurred after Afghan Taliban forces launched mortar attacks targeting residential areas and a local market in the Waziristan region.
The deputy commissioner of South Waziristan confirmed the incident, noting that the shelling struck civilian infrastructure in the northwestern district. This flare-up is part of a broader surge in hostilities, with reports of intense fighting spreading to the Orakzai sector and areas near the Durand Line.
Security sources indicated that the conflict has intensified at multiple border posts, specifically Ziarat, Doran, and Uta-Sar. In response to the initial mortar fire, Pakistani forces engaged in retaliatory actions, with security officials claiming to have inflicted casualties among the ranks of the Afghan Taliban.
The situation deteriorated further when Afghan Taliban authorities announced the commencement of large-scale offensive operations directed at Pakistani military installations. This move prompted a firm response from Islamabad, which characterized the initial cross-border shelling as unprovoked aggression.
Local reports from Paktia suggest that heavy combat is ongoing, particularly in areas adjacent to Pakistan’s Kurram district. The current instability follows a weekend of heightened tension, during which Pakistan conducted airstrikes aimed at targets associated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban.
