Columbus Day 2025: What Is Open and Closed, From Banks to USPS and Stock Markets
Discover what is open and closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day, including schedules for banks, the USPS, stock markets, and major retailers.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — While Columbus Day, also celebrated as Indigenous Peoples Day, stands as an official federal holiday, data from the Pew Research Center shows that its observance varies significantly across the United States.
Observed on the second Monday in October, the date delivers a three-day weekend for select workers, including federal employees and certain state personnel, whose organizations recognize the holiday.
Efforts to move away from honoring explorer Christopher Columbus in favor of recognizing North America’s original inhabitants have caused the holiday to lose some of its historical widespread observance.
Because Oct. 12 is designated as a federal holiday, numerous public services and commercial enterprises will alter their normal operations.
Federal government offices will shut their doors on Monday, Oct. 12, granting federal employees a day off in observance of the federal holiday.
Equity markets will maintain regular trading hours, as neither the New York Stock Exchange nor the Nasdaq market treats the occasion as a holiday.
Both major stock exchanges will operate normally on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET.
The U.S. Postal Service does observe Columbus Day as a holiday, resulting in the suspension of all standard residential and business mail delivery alongside the closure of all USPS facilities.
Financial institutions have varying schedules, making it advisable for customers to verify local branch availability ahead of time.
JPMorgan Chase confirmed that its physical branches will remain open on Oct. 12, though the institution will treat the date as a holiday for online financial transactions.
Under that schedule, account holders are unable to schedule transactions for Columbus Day, and recurring transactions were instead handled on the preceding business day.
Several other major financial institutions, such as Wells Fargo and Bank of America, will keep their doors closed for the holiday.
Retail operations continue as usual at Costco, which does not count Columbus Day among the seven holidays observed by the discount warehouse chain.
Walmart locations will also maintain standard operating hours throughout Columbus Day, according to official information provided by the retailer.
