China’s CXMT Begins Advanced AI Memory Production Despite Low Yields
ChangXin Memory Technologies launches HBM3E production for AI processors in China, overcoming low manufacturing yields to build domestic tech independence.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — ChangXin Memory Technologies has initiated low-volume manufacturing of advanced high-bandwidth memory chips, marking a notable milestone for Beijing as it seeks to bypass supply constraints and strengthen domestic semiconductor capabilities.
The prominent Chinese memory-chip maker is moving forward with the production of HBM3E, a specialized memory technology critical for artificial intelligence processors, even though current manufacturing efficiency results in only about 20% usable chips.
Sources indicate that CXMT is pressing ahead despite the poor yields because domestic AI hardware developers have faced severe difficulties securing sufficient advanced memory to scale up their operations. Low yields inherently drive up manufacturing costs since a high volume of produced units must ultimately be discarded or sent back for reworking.
Industry analysts view this venture into small-scale HBM production as a genuine stride forward for the Chinese hardware sector amidst surging global demand for AI infrastructure. By establishing domestic production, China aims to alleviate a major supply chain bottleneck and narrow the technological divide separating its domestic manufacturers from Western industry leaders.
While this move represents a meaningful advance in achieving technological independence, significant hurdles still remain for CXMT regarding mass production scale, manufacturing yields, and the future development of next-generation hardware.
