China Rejects Taiwan’s Allegations Following Comedian Assault Indictments
China dismisses Taiwan's accusations of involvement in an attack against comedian Huang Yi-hao after prosecutors indict five individuals.
POLICY WIRE — Beijing and Taipei — A Chinese government spokesperson asserted on Wednesday that Taiwan is actively provoking confrontation and fueling anti-China sentiment. The remarks came in response to Taiwanese prosecutors formally indicting five individuals tied to an alleged plot against a local entertainer.
Five Taiwanese men face formal charges including attempted aggravated assault following a September incident where entertainer Huang Yi-hao was struck by a car. The New Taipei District Prosecutors Office released indictment details highlighting the alleged transnational repression scheme.
Prosecutors stated the targeted comedian previously performed comedic routines critical of Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council strongly condemned the alleged interference by the Chinese Communist Party.
Taiwanese officials have repeatedly accused Beijing of orchestrating operations to intimidate critics. Meanwhile, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not provide a response to incoming requests for comment regarding the incident.
