POLICY WIRE — Shenzhen, China — Beijing has officially acknowledged it is engaged in discussions to host a landmark assembly featuring world leaders Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump.
Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, informed reporters this week that China is maintaining communication with all relevant parties regarding a gathering of the three heads of state.
The proposed summit is slated for later this month, coinciding with the margins of a regional conference held in the southern city of Shenzhen.
While such an encounter would represent a historic milestone, political analysts suggest that substantive policy discussions may be unlikely given the deeply conflicting interests of the United States, Russia, and China.
Experts posit the event might primarily serve as a choreographed photo opportunity, with Chinese officials carefully managing the logistics and optics of the interaction.
Sun Yun, directing the China program at the Stimson Centre, noted that while the meeting is likely to occur, the specific format and depth of the content remain to be seen.
