POLICY WIRE — Canberra, Australia — Australia’s capital, Canberra, has announced its participation in a nationwide gun buyback program following the recent deadly attack in Bondi Beach. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the initiative, emphasizing the need for enhanced public safety measures.
New South Wales (NSW), Australia’s most populous state, was the first to commit to the buyback plan. The program aims to reduce the number of firearms in circulation by offering financial compensation to gun owners who voluntarily surrender their weapons.
“In light of the tragic events at Bondi Beach, it is imperative that we take decisive action to ensure the safety of all Australians,” Albanese stated. “The gun buyback program is a crucial step towards reducing the prevalence of firearms and preventing future incidents of gun violence.”
The Bondi Beach attack, which resulted in multiple casualties, has reignited the national debate on gun control. Authorities are working to implement stricter regulations and enforcement measures to curb gun-related crimes.
