POLICY WIRE — City, Country — A California father has been sentenced in connection with the fatal shooting of his 9-year-old autistic son. The incident occurred in the yard of the boy’s grandparents, according to police reports.
The defendant, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the minor victim, stood trial for the charge of involuntary manslaughter. The prosecution presented evidence indicating that the father had recklessly handled a firearm, leading to the tragic death of the child.
“The evidence clearly showed a pattern of negligence regarding the storage and use of the firearm,” stated the prosecuting attorney during the trial. “This resulted in an avoidable and heartbreaking loss of life.”
The defense argued that the incident was a tragic accident, not a deliberate act. They highlighted the father’s cooperation with law enforcement and his expressed grief over the incident.
“This was a terrible misfortune, not a criminal act,” the defense attorney told the court. “Our client is devastated and has fully cooperated with the authorities from the beginning.”
The jury deliberated for several hours before reaching a verdict. The father was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to five years in state prison, along with mandatory counseling sessions focused on firearm safety and grief management.
In a statement, the judge emphasized the importance of responsible firearm ownership. “This tragedy could have been prevented with proper care and attention to firearm safety,” the judge said. “It is our hope that this sentence will serve as a reminder to others of the severe consequences of negligence.”
The boy’s family released a statement expressing their grief and calling for stronger gun control laws. “No family should have to endure what we have,” the statement read. “We urge lawmakers to take action to prevent such senseless tragedies in the future.”
