POLICY WIRE — Dublin, Ireland — Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ received an email alleging a bomb threat, which authorities say originates from the same group responsible for recent threats to passenger aircraft across Europe.
The message, sent to RTÉ, referenced a series of hoax threats that disrupted at least 27 flights yesterday and followed earlier alerts earlier in the week.
Broadcast outlets throughout the continent reported receiving similar emails titled MESSAGE TO THE WEST on Friday, triggering building evacuations and the suspension of scheduled programming.
European security agencies have opened investigations into this latest wave, which arrives a day after a minimum of 26 threats were logged across the region, causing some aircraft to be diverted, emergency landings to be made, and extensive security searches to be conducted.
RTÉ staff were moved to safety as part of the response, and other media organisations reported comparable precautionary measures amid the heightened threat level.
The series of alerts has affected air travel hubs in London, Dublin and Helsinki, leaving passengers to face delays and cancellations.
