Ben Whishaw Claims James Bond Franchise Requires Total Reinvention for New Era
James Bond actor Ben Whishaw suggests the 007 series needs a complete reboot to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world following the Daniel Craig era.
POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Ben Whishaw, who portrayed the technical genius Q across three James Bond movies, has suggested that the long-running spy franchise requires a total overhaul heading into its next chapter.
The 46-year-old actor served alongside Daniel Craig, playing the influential head of MI6’s research and development division. Whishaw originally took over the role from John Cleese, making his debut in the series with the 2012 hit Skyfall.
Following his introduction, the quartermaster returned for the 2015 film Spectre and gave his final performance as the character in the 2021 installment, No Time to Die.
In a recent discussion with The Sunday Times, Whishaw noted that the global landscape has shifted significantly since the last Bond entry, emphasizing that filmmakers must find ways to keep the story relevant to modern audiences.
I think it needs to be reinvented completely. But it’s not for me to say, the actor remarked regarding the series’ uncertain path moving forward. Whishaw also expressed a sense of dissatisfaction with his own character’s development, pointing out that while the films made a brief mention of his sexuality, the aspect was never explored further.
The actor, who publicly identified as gay in 2013, also noted that he rarely reflects on the Bond universe, noting that doing so would feel strange.
Regarding the intense speculation surrounding who will succeed Daniel Craig—who has held the lead role since 2006—Whishaw described the media frenzy as deliberate hype intended to build suspense.
People go crazy about it. it is all deliberate hype. When you are working on it, it is incredibly secretive, almost like being a spy. You only get the pages of the script that you are in. It’s a ploy to create suspense and glamour, but it’s kind of fun, he said.
The search for the next 007 began in May and is rumored to be in its final stages, with names like Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, and Josh O’Connor mentioned as contenders for the role. The next film is currently in development, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight set to write the script. Amy Pascal and David Heyman return as producers, while Denis Villeneuve is slated to direct.
