POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — Beijing has announced a new rule banning the possession of drones within the city limits, marking a significant tightening of its already strict drone regulations. The measure comes into effect in mid-November and is part of broader efforts to enhance security in the capital.

The city had previously banned the sale of drones in May and required existing owners to register their devices with real names. Under the revised rules, which took effect this month, the possession or storage of drones or key components within Beijing’s administrative area will also be prohibited. Authorities can confiscate non-compliant drones and impose fines on individuals and companies.

Existing drone owners will be offered subsidies to sell their devices at designated buyback locations or to recycle them. However, bringing drones into Beijing from outside the city, including by tourists, remains illegal. The move reflects Beijing’s continued emphasis on stringent security protocols compared to other regions in China.
