At Least 27 Killed in Deadly Airstrikes Targeting Village Near Sanaa
Airstrikes on a village near Sanaa have killed at least 27 people and wounded 36 others as regional tensions escalate across Yemen.
POLICY WIRE — Sanaa, Yemen — A series of aerial attacks targeting residential areas in a village near the capital has resulted in the deaths of at least 27 people, according to local officials.
A spokesperson for the Houthi-run health ministry reported that 36 other individuals sustained injuries during the strikes, with the majority of the casualties identified as women and children.
Anees Alasbahi, representing the health ministry, stated to The Associated Press that Saudi Arabia was responsible for the strikes carried out on the village of al-Shariya.
The Houthi-run Saba news agency also confirmed the death toll, describing the Saturday-based Saudi airstrikes as one of the most lethal recent incidents in the region.
This violence follows a separate deadly incident on Friday, where an airstrike hitting a market in southern Yemen claimed the lives of at least 30 people.
Regarding the market attack, both Houthi forces and the Saudi-backed military have accused the opposition of being responsible for the fatalities.
The recent surge in hostilities occurs as Houthi rebels claim to have launched six drone and missile attacks targeting Saudi oil facilities, the Riyadh airport, and military troops.
Observers note that the recent collapse of the previous truce has effectively reignited the long-standing civil war within Yemen.
