POLICY WIRE — Tempe, Arizona — Arizona State University has placed head hockey coach Greg Powers on administrative leave following the collapse of player Matthew Mayich during a summer team training session. Mayich, 21, remains on life support and is expected to have little chance of recovery, according to his family’s attorney, Rob Carey.

Carey stated that the family has consistently demanded that all coaching staff be removed from their roles since the incident occurred. He criticized the school for keeping an assistant coach, who is close to Powers, in his position, calling it unacceptable. The attorney described the coaching staff’s actions as entirely inadequate, citing preventable heatstroke as the cause of the severe medical emergency.

ASU Athletics Director Graham Rossini said the university is focused on supporting Mayich and his family while ensuring student-athletes receive the necessary care as the season approaches. Rossini claimed the decision to place Powers on leave was made after careful consideration to maintain stability within the program. Assistant Coach Mike Corbett will take charge of the team this weekend, with an interim head coach to be appointed soon.
