Amateur Photographer’s 9/11 Image Captures Tragic Heroism of FDNY Crew

POLICY WIRE — New York, United States — A powerful image from September 11, 2001, has become a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of first responders. Taken by an amateur photographer, the photo shows a lone fire truck speeding across the Brooklyn Bridge toward the burning World Trade Center towers.
Aaron McLamb, then a 20-year-old volunteer with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, was working in a Brooklyn factory when he noticed the massive fire in lower Manhattan. He grabbed his camera and climbed to the top of the building, capturing images until his film ran out. One of those photos, featuring Ladder 118, has since become one of the most recognizable from that day.

The six firefighters on Ladder 118 were killed when the south tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m., while they were helping evacuate people from the Marriott Hotel. The tragedy claimed 2,753 lives in New York, along with 184 at the Pentagon and 40 on Flight 93. Over 10,000 more have died in the years following due to illnesses linked to the toxic environment at Ground Zero. McLamb later shared the photo with the firehouse, where it was recognized as a poignant tribute to the fallen crew.
